New Delhi, Feb 7 (IANS) He wore a turban and beard to play a sardar in hit film "Yamla Pagla Deewana", and now actor Sunny Deol is set to essay a dhoti-clad priest in Chandraprakash Dwivedi's "Mohalla Assi".

Sunny has taken on a very fresh and different character in the film. His look, complete with a dhoti, kurta, gamchha (towel), kolhapuri chappals and a choti (plait) is unique and quite unlike that of a Bollywood hero. But Sunny is quite excited.

"The script of 'Mohalla Assi' is very different and interesting, especially the character I play is very unique - it's not quite like anything I have played yet. You will see me in an entirely new avatar. It's true that I will be playing a pundit, therefore, I will be dressed in clothes that are typical for a pundit, right down to a 'choti' to complete the look," Sunny said in a press statement.

The story of "Mohalla Assi" is based in Benaras, says Dwivedi, whose last directorial was the critically acclaimed "Pinjar".

"It is a movie based in a famous and historical 'mohalla' (locality) on the southern end of Benaras and the river bank of Ganga. The film is based on a popular Hindi novel 'Kashi Ka Assi' written by Dr. Kashinath Singh," said Dwivedi, best known for his mythological TV shows "Chanakya" and "Mrityunjay".

On the reason behind choosing Sunny for the role, he said: "The movie is a satire and Sunny just seemed like someone that could do justice to the character, as he has proven to play serious roles equally as good as he plays comic roles."

The film is being produced by Vinay Tiwari of Crossword Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.

Sudhir Mishra returns. And he does that it style! Yeh Saali Zindagi is a complex plot told with the maturity that is expected out of a seasoned director like him.

The film has quite a two clear parallel stories. One story is about Arun (Irrfan Khan) and love of his life Priti (Chitrangda). However while he is away for a month his friend Shyam (Vipul Gupta) sweeps Priti off her feet. The other story is about Kuldeep (Arunoday Singh) and his wife Shanti (Aditi Rao). Kuldeep is assigned the job to kidnap Shyam who is supposed to get married to the daughter of the Home Minister. And he kidnaps Priti along with Shyam as they believe she is his fiancee. Arun decides to get Priti out of the trouble but realizes that he will have to help Shyam too to see her happy! Political leaders and underworld dons are also pulled into the story taking it into a chaotic zone. But never for once does the film move away from the actual plot.

What works for the film is Mishra's grip on every department of filmmaking. While he comes up with a super tight and well paced script, he converts it into an equally impressive film. Each character stands out beautifully, up to the smallest goon. Yeh Saali Zindagi is shot very effectively and the director shows great understanding of cinematic language in the effects he uses. The narration goes back and forth into the past and also the characters doing the voiceover change quite a few times. But it never gets confusing for the audience. The music too is used very well as a part of the narrative. One of the strongest points of the film is its dialogues. While they are very fitting of the characters they also keep the humour alive. The high frequency of profanity might be an issue for many though.

The performances are top grade. Irrfan Khan scores above all with his impeccable timing - something he is known for. Chitrangda Singh does her bit but for some reasons has quite an anglicized Hindi accent. Arunoday Singh fits into his character very well and so does Aditi Rao. The chemistry between the two is expressed well and the 22 kisses (that made a lot of news) they shared on screen never seem out of place or forced. The supporting cast has its own impact on the story.

Yeh Saali Zindagi is elementarily a love story but the chaos adds the element of thrill in it. And then the characters and dialogues complete it. In essence it is similar to Mishra's cult Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahi as it most of the story happens within a day while flashbacks collate to give a backgrounder to the situation. Overall, this is one crazy ride that entertains to the fullest and will leave you with a smile. Just a reminder: YSZ is an 'A' rated flick.

The film takes off with two friends Nandu (Saurabh Shukla) and Ram (Vinay Pathak) meeting a single girl Koyal (Mona Singh) at a pub. As Ram and Koyal strike a conversation they realize Nandu, who had gone the washroom, has actually left. Since Koyal has no place to go Ram takes her home where he used to stay with his ex-girlfriend Sanjana (Mahie Gill). The story takes a turn when Sanjana walks in and find Koyal in the house.

Sanjana is involved with a don called Lucky who is a lookalike of Ram. She has stolen his money and now trying to leave India but she needs her passport, which she left at Ram's place. Ram's friend Nandu, a private detective, helps her get it but falls into the net of the don himself.

Utt Pataang has an interesting and impressive narrative. Each character is introduced one by one and his or her involvement in the plot is explained. The story keeps getting into flashbacks, which play out into the present situation. What seems to be a regular love story at the outset turns out to be a mad comic thriller. The connect remains throughout, despite the difficult screenplay, which is commendable.

However apart from the narrative structure there is hardly anything that manages to make a mark about this film. The characters are patchy. Lucky is a don and has a posh office which he runs under the guise of another company. He is someone who never spares anyone who takes away his money and is dreaded - at least that's what is gathered from Nandu's description. However he does not even have Rs 5 crore to buy a house for his wife! Also he keeps mixing up with French and Hindi. While he is talking to his wife in sparkling Hindi, he turns French when speaks with others! Also there is nothing in the plot that required Lucky to be a lookalike of Ram, except vain attempt to create comedy. Then there is Nandu, a detective, who has done all possible research on people around him does not bother to check a bag before he takes it to the don.

Thankfully for the film there were no songs to loosen the pace. The first half is pretty decent. The second half loses way only to find the rhythm back later.

The performances are disappointing too. While Saurabh Shukla shines, Vinay Pathak does not quite fit the bill. Mahie Gill, usually a performer, draws blank too. Mona Singh is repetitive.

Utt Pataang does not have anything that could push you to buy a ticket - unless you really want to watch it just for the sake of watching it! This one is a disappointment.
